rivers are running full

Spring is finally coming around here at the ranch. Since winter was slow in coming this year, I guess it had to be slow in leaving! The meadows are clearing off on the south facing slopes, and water is running everywhere. Kim and I tried to take the ranch pickup up the road past the stack yard today, but its still well over a foot deep on the road where I quit plowing. With the sun shine, I think we will be able to get to the upper meadows in about 10 days. Most years we would be harrowing and aerating the meadows already.
The tulips are ready to bloom, and several other flowers are blooming. Sure is refreshing to see new life. Kim has been cleaning out the flower gardens in front of the house, getting ready for the annual rite of spending a ton of money at the garden center! We will start calving the few bred cows we kept very soon. The cattle were very happy to get moved to the calving meadow last week. They are ready for summer as well!
I’ve been servicing all of the equipment, preparing for summer. I have almost used 50 gallons of motor oil! We all deal with the cost of fuel every day, but filters, oil, grease, tires and everything has shot way up in price. I don’t see how we can charge enough on our custom work to make it pay this year. Time will tell……
Joey is out of school next week. He graduates from 8th grade this year. We are hoping to be in a situation where we can spend the winter some where else next year. That being said, Joey will be in a new school, at least part of the year. The school here doesn’t challenge the kids at all, so he will have difficulty in the switch.
We have not decided if we are going to hire summer help this year or not. If we don’t do a lot of custom work, we will be available to spend more time here. The fences have been really messed up with the record snow levels. The snow breaks the wire, as well as pushes over some posts.
Gotta Go for now, stay with God!
