Calving time!

Sorry for the lack of impute lately. Typing isn’t my favorite past time. And to boot, I just typed a whole page and then lost it before I got it uploaded……….
Spring mud season is here. The snow is almost melted, which is not good. It’s way too early to have the snow melted off. This may mean a long dry summer, which is bad for pasture and hay crops. Although with diesel already selling for $3.25 per gallon, we wont be able to pay for the fuel to cut hay any ways! Hopefully we can take advantage of CAFTA and get cheap hay from Mexico! “this is a joke of course”.
We are in the middle of calving right now. We keep the first time heifers close to the house so we can check them every three or four hours. The old cows are not domesticated cattle, which means they are totally on the fight protecting the new born babies. They get really mean during this season. Joey and I ride horses, looking for new born calves. We then rope the calf, identify the sex and ear tag them with a corresponding numbered tag with their mother. All this is being done while the cow is trying her best to attack you , your horse and anything else in the vicinity! The best western stories are made from the worst wrecks!
Summer promises to be busy again. We still have over three miles of new fence to build. We also have to complete the annual rebuilding of the parameter fence that gets pushed down every winter by elk, snow and trees. We are also continually improving the irrigation ditches and head gates.
The fall hunt bookings are going good. We have two seasons booked already , with a ton of interest in the remaining seasons. Summer guests are calling too, so it must be getting that time! We hope to finish the new tack room and barn up at high camp this summer. We also are hoping to complete the roping arena. All it takes is money and time!
OK, got to go, the dogs are barking, so they are up to no good!
God Bless,
Matt, Kim and Joey
